Milford Track (the first time)

It's a classic for a reason, despite being hard as anything to get on to. Absolutely loved the Milford, despite it being uncharacteristically sunny for our trip.

Key bits

We completed this over 16th to 19th March 2021. Easyhike organised our transport, taking the Fiordland Outdoors boat and then getting our car relocated from Te Anau Downs to Milford Sound for pick up after the Sandfly Bay water taxi. This meant we could get on whatever water taxi suited us without stress, and had comfy clothes waiting - definitely recommend if you have a big enough group.

Other useful information:

There's a fair bit of swimming if you're willing to get cold - so if you're someone who doesn't shy away at chilly water or loves a refreshing dip, bring your togs and a towel. Two out of three nights saw my mates jumping into a convenient lake and looking refreshed (while I mostly decided they were mad given how freaking cold it is).

Milford is an amazing, fantastic walk, and part of what makes it fun is walking hut to hut with the same group. It's one of the only times you'll be essentially hiking with a group of 40, perhaps not seeing each other day to day but always coming back together at night. That does mean if you have a character in your group, you're now stuck with them (we had a dude who boiled carrots, then drank the carrot water and re-packed the veges in his bag? among other things. strange dude) but does lead to good chats.

Inside the Great Walk season this is bookings required, and it often books out in less than five minutes. You won't get access to the track without booking. Just in case you've missed that memo.
